| Past Talks of the year 2009 |
| Tuesday 25th August 2009 - Terry was coming down to talk to us about Sedir magic. That didn't quite work out! So we went to plan B and Cliff discussed various things with the group and we all had a very nice chat about Southend and the wider Pagan related world and subjects. Obviously, we didn't charge for the evenings rather "off the wall" entertainment - but we did run the legendary Southend raffle! Well, it wouldn't be the lion without the raffle would it :-) The good news is that Cliff now has a formal plan B (no, I'm not telling you, that's our Secret & Terry has said he'll come back and do his talk in March! |
|
Tuesday 28th July 2009 - Herpetology - The Mad Snake Lady (and crew) - Syd and friends were good enough to come along to the Paganlion on this night to give us a talk about all thing scaly. Syd introduced the topic then, strangely enough, sprung with fluid motion into the subject of snakes - which is clearly dear to her heart! It was a brilliant talk Syd, thanks a lot for doing such a great job. Now I'm more than a little nervous of snakes - but having met some of Syd's beasties, I may not be quite as worried by them in the future! Syd has mentioned that she might come back and do a talk on the spiritual side of snakes in the future - we'll have to see. Certainly this practical talk was good fun and despite nerves, I wouldn't have missed it for the world! Rosie is a beautiful (if big & worrying to me) snaky type thing. |
| Tuesday 23rd June 2009 - The Solstice - Tracey - (At Short Notice) - Tracey came along with a batch of research on what the Solstice celebration was all about & what it means and has meant to other countries and cultures. I have to say that I found the talk very interesting and certainly learned a thing or two that I didn't know about the celebration! Thanks to Tracey for stepping up to fill the speakers slot! You're a star mate (never say never again huh?) |
|
Tuesday 26th May 2009 - Pagan Paths - Keith - (At short Notice) - well, this was my first whole talk of my own writing for the Lion. Essentially I done a run through of the main Pagan Paths - a brief wiz round Paganism if you will. I have no idea what people thought of it - certainly it was loaded with my own opinions and probably far too Witchy heavy for those of other Paths - but I have to speak of that I know! if anyone else fancies penning a word or two on my talk (or for that matter any of the others at the Lion) just let me have your write ups & I'll publish away! |
|
Tuesday 28th April, Subject: Transparent Tarot, Speaker: Emily Carding - Today we met Emily who was good enough to come all the way from Hastings to talk to the Paganlion! I was pleased to note that there was a good turn out tonight, so maybe it's the interesting subjects that get bums on seats. Emily told us about the development & evolution of her Transparent tarot deck and the ways in which it is used. It was fascinating to see how the creativity of the artist had driven the concept of the desk in frankly revolutionary ways. I know that some of the Tarot readers from the Lion were very captivated by these cards! Emily was also kind enough to show us a little about her new oracle deck - but if I told you any more about that Emily would have to shoot me :-) Anyway, the Lion's thanks go out to Emily for a great little talk, perhaps you'll come back again if (no WHEN) you get the deck of the Shee into print? If you want to read more about Emily's Transparent Trot Click here for a review of the subject! Ps - Nice tights Syd - hee, hee! |
|
Tuesday 24th March, Subject: Dowsing, Speaker: Our very own Jayne - (At Short Notice) - Jayne was originally going to give this talk in June! However, we could not get a speaker for March :-( SO, with much a gallant thought Jayne move her talk to March and lost several months of preparation time. Not that we knew about that on the day! Jayne came up with a delightful talk that was both interesting and funny all at the same time! We got to find out about the history of Dowsing and the various people that have lost, won and lost again, fortunes pursuing this craft. Jayne also bought along some home made dowsing tools, some plastic cups and an immense quantity of chocolate & sweeties! We had great fun & put on more than a pound or two playing hunt the sweetie! Our thanks to our resident sweetie for an entertaining talk - nice one Jayne! |
|
4th Tuesday in February 2009, Subject: Virgin's Night 2009 - Various speakers were kind enough to brave the crowd (well I say crowd, there could have been more there - I mean, honestly, we offer victims to the fore & get a short turn out - what's a Pagan to do if the word Virgin's doesn't get bums on seats? So who came along & done what?
|
Tuesday 27th January 2009,
Subject: Paganlion's AGM
2009 - The AGM went off well again, thanks for all that came & put
their ideas across the table. The following is a very brief
account of what went on.
|
| Past Talks of the year 2008 |
| Tuesday 24th November 2008, Subject: The Dreamtime, Speaker/Performer: Denise (Me) - I delivered Denise's talk on the Dreamtime to a very small audience, I thought that it went down quite well. Though I'm sure that I didn't do the talk justice, I enjoyed it :-) Some of those Aboriginal tribe and place names are REALLY difficult to get your tongue round. There was a quiz and boy was it a toughee, Cliff & Jayne won the prize and Daniel (coordinating for the naughty table) scored an amazing number of points & still managed to loose! Boy, am I mean & nasty adjudicator :-P |
| Tuesday 28th October 2008, Subject: Greek Mythology, Speaker/Performer: Robin Herne - What can I say about Robin! His talks are legendary down our way & I will be asking him back in 2009 to do another talk if he's up for it. The talk was entertaining, riveting and even managed to keep us quiet for so long that we managed to almost forget to do the raffle & boy was it one heck of a raffle! Shed loads of prizes and some of them not half bad. I don't know - at this rate we'll loose our reputation of having the naffest raffle in the land lords & ladies. Many thanks to Mark for the kind donation of the books!!! |
| Tuesday 23rd September 2008, Subject: The Legends & Myths of Robin Hood, Speaker/Performer: Tracey - Tracey promised us a talk on Robin! I must say that considering Tracey gives good little talks and knows her subjects well - there was a very small turn out! It did kinda make for a weird evening folks - trust me, despite the "naughty elements" in the room - you missed a good talk! I only hope that attendance and other things haven't put Tracey off doing these things - I listened round the distractions, despite one or two of my own & the talk was one of the best we've had! Personally I wanted to know more about "Richard de Suvage" (misspelt no doubt) but I suspect Trace just wanted to leave - there's interaction & having a good time & there's "extracting the Michael", hate to nag lords & ladies - but think we were guilty of the later rather than the former! Sorry Tracey :-( |
| Tuesday 26th August 2008, Subject: Divination, Speaker/Performer: Terry Smith - Terry's a stalwart soul and has given talks to the Lion a good few times before! This time he introduced us to a myriad of different type of Divination and I was amazed at the variety of different ways that folks down the ages have chosen to try to divine to the paths of fate! The second half of the talk was a workshop - where we were given all sorts of shiny things & told to go away and design our own divination methods. Many and strange were the things that we came up with - but I would say to you all "decry not the amazing powers of the mystery object" :-) Cheers Terry! |
| Tuesday 22nd July 2008, Subject: Past Life Regression, Speaker/Performer: Steve - Steve (from Equinox) came along and gave us a great talk on Past Life Regression a subject which prior to this talk I had known absolutely nothing about! I thing Steve started out quite nervous, but by the end of the evening I think that he was well into the wing of things & may be the Lion will be able to convince him to come again? |
| Tuesday 24th June 2008, Subject: An Introduction into Organic Gardening, Speaker/Performer: Carole Shorney - Carol bravely came along to the Lion and gave us a talk on all sorts of things related to Organic Gardening and the local network! It was a very informative and education al talk and I think that we all learned a thing or two! |
| Tuesday 27th May 2008, Subject: Drumming Circle, Speaker/Performer: Samantha Marks - What can I say? Sam came down (with friends) to Southend and we gathered in a great big circle and drummed to all sorts of different beats. With luck we'll see Sam back at the Lion again next year! I enjoyed this one heck of a lot - I know I enjoy drumming full stop - but I think Sam's got a real talent for guiding the drumming!! |
| Tuesday 22nd April 2008, Talking About the Runes, Pete Jennings - Pete came along to the Lion & gave us a great talk in his own inimitable style on the Runes, their use and their history! I doubt I can say a heck of a lot about what Pete does that you don't all know - It's always informative and it's always fun - he's a heck of a storyteller!! As ever, a great talk and it was good to see Pete back in Southend - Thanks Pete. |
|
Tuesday 25th March 2008 - Life in the Universe - Bill Forster - I'm afraid that personal matters kept me away from the moot tonight! Jayne's been kind enough to provide the following write up. "Bill kindly agreed to talk to us on the subject of Life in The Universe which he managed very well despite suffering from an appalling cold and almost losing his voice. The subject matter was well received by an attentive audience who felt sufficiently inspired to share their own opinions and knowledge of the subject with the group. When the mathematical probabilities are examined, extrapolating on the infinite numbers and types of galaxies, the conclusion is that we are not alone; there are alternate life forms out there! Excellent pictures of outer space and some very strange rock formations on other planets were circulated causing puzzlement and conjecture as we tried to imagine what they were and what had caused them. In conclusion a very interesting and wide ranging subject which had the potential to go to infinity and beyond! Thanks Bill." |
|
Tuesday 26th February 2008 - Virgins Night - Virgin's night (that's Paganlion's night for encouraging new speakers - who have chosen a topic "from the hat" at the January moot) went off quite well despite a few little changes to the advertised schedule. Tracey hadn't had time to get her talk done because of serious healthy problems with her partner's dad. Robynne, Thea & Andy were all ill so they weren't able to attend. Now that did rather leave the schedule a little thin - Cliff scheduled to give a talk on the Northern Tradition, Jayne a talk on Dowsing and Julia with her talk on Initiation! Fortunately I knew about this before the night - so I hastily (& I do mean hastily, I started to prepare at 6:30 on the night) picked one of the spare talks & tried to get it ready. Cliff gave his talk 1st & threw in a curve ball - turning his talk into a quiz on Goddess and Gods! It was a good giggle Cliff, thanks for pulling it out of the hat :-) It wasn't even breaking the rules of Virgin's night as you picked that topic for last years Virgin's night!! Jayne gave her talk on Dowsing, which was really an introduction to what could have been a much bigger talk! Julia then gave her talk on Initiation and led an open discussion. We then had one of the largest Paganlion raffles that we've had in ages and went promptly onto my talk. I'd picked Male Mysteries, I'm told that the talk was ok - but I can't recall much of it - I rambled for 20 minutes and had barely introduced the topic! I wonder if what I talked about had any relevance to the subject? Perhaps, one day, someone will tell me? |
|
Tuesday 22nd of January 2008 - Paganlion AGM - The Paganlion AGM went off well - thanks to all who attended & those that sent apologies cos they couldn't make it! Here's a few highlights (other than the draw for Virgins Night - which I've put the details of on the 4th Tuesday page) what happened.

| Past Talks of the year 2007 |
|
Tuesday November 27th, Subject: Vodou - Facts & Fallacies, Speaker/Performer: Mark Barwell, We did have the Leigh Mummers booked for tonight - but that not proved possible. Mark being an all round good egg, has offered us this talk to take the Mummers slot. Mark gave a talk on Vodou to the Pagan Lion. For those of you that missed it (or those of you that want to hear it again), you can download the audio files (and accompanying sheets) at: Click Here. I think that having an audio transcript is a 1st for a talk at the lion. Mark's talk was (in my opinion) one of the best we've had in 2007, so it's well worth checking out! |
| Tuesday October 23rd, Subject: Dark & Haunted Storytelling Night, Speakers: Lydia, Tracey, Karen, Robyn, Paul, Bill & others - Twas a smallish gathering of brave souls that came to this evening of dark & spooky tales. It was good to see such a fair turn out - I was a little worried that an evening of "self-entertainment" wouldn't be to the Lion's choice! However, it seemed to go down well with more stories to hand than we actually had time to get through. I shan't tell you the stories - that was what the evening was for! If you missed it - you missed a good one! You'll know better next time :-) Our thanks to Norm for the loan of the Snake stick! |
| Tuesday September 25th, Subject: Yarrow Lore, Speaker/Performer: Karen - Karen has been promising this talk to us for an AGE. N the night, the turn out was good and much discussion was had over the relative benefits of Yarrow. There were two boards set up - one for medical benefits & one for magical uses of the herb. When the audience spotted a use, they had to call it out & it was written upon the relevant board by Karen's glamorous assistant - Syd! Who tottered backwards & forwards in red high heels all evening & managed to avoid falling even once. The talk was all we expected it to be - with many. many, many (I could say many a LOT more) uses of Yarrow explored! Our thanks to Karen (& Syd) for a great night!!! |
| Tuesday 28th August, Subject: Pirates and the Mythology of the Seven Seas, Speaker/Performer: Tracey - Tracey was good enough to step in with a talk at the last moment when Denise had to drop out with her Dreamtime talk. I must say that I really enjoyed this talk Tracey! Pirates are always a fascinating subject which seem to conjure up all sorts of romantic images for allsorts of people. I think Tracey managed to pitch the talk about right - exploring the glamour & the myth together with the more ugly realities of "life on the ocean waves"! |
| Tuesday 24th July, Subject: Vikings & their Deities, Speaker/Performer: Carol Tierney - Yet again the IPC spring to the Paganlion's rescue - thanks to Carol, Gary & Dale for coming down to see us and giving us such a great talk! I can honestly say that I haven't had such a good laugh for a long while! The Jerry Springer style interview was inspired. Special thanks to Dale for taking the part of the Lord of Misrule!! I can't believe that that was all of the top of your head - great stuff. Thanks also to Robyn for taking the part of Frigg - oh and I enjoyed taking the part of Thor - not that I like shouting or anything :-) |
| Tuesday 26th June, Subject: Ancestral Warriors, Speaker/Performer: Gary Tierney, Gary was brave enough (well he didn't have to be THAT brave - he did come well armoured & armed for the evening :-) to come hence to the Pagan Lion and stand forth with a rite good talk on the arts & practices of ancient warriors in Britain. Gary bought all sorts of goodies along for us to play with. Swords, daggers, shields, spears, axes & chain mail! A merry old time was had talking of decapitations, honour, tradition & all things noble & good! Thanks again to Gary & Carol for coming all the way down from Ipswich! I'm pleased to report that no one at the Moot was in anyway damaged during the production or delivery of this talk :-) As a note - we welcomed Lydia back for the 1st time in 2007! Only as an observer - but it was great to see yah Lyd! Let's hope you'll be back in your normal capacity in July! |
| Tuesday 22nd May, Subject: Storytelling with the Gippeswic Storytellers, Speaker/Performers: Carol, Gary, Robin & Terry. A group from the Gippeswic storytellers (ok, I've spelt that wrong - you know the email address - tell me all about it :-)) were kind enough to head down to Southend to entertain us with wonderful stories for the evening. Some for the stories were "why dogs talk that way", "how Thor had to wear a dress to regain his hammer", " the Irish Werewolf & the bard with the big instrument", "the green mist of spring", "cunning Eric of Suffolk & wise old Tracy of Essex". If you get a chance to attend another of their tellings - take the lion's word for it & get yourself there! You won't regret it! |
| Tuesday 24th April, Subject: 2012 & the Emerging Global Consciousness, Speaker/Performer: Mark Barwell, Mark gave what I have to describe as an amazing talk! It was weird, weird stuff!!! The number of links & cross links that one can draw to various dates in 2012 for the end of the world are uncanny - I think that Mark had great fun twisting our puny little minds with all these strange esoteric word & number tricks. I'm sure that the twanging sounds of minds unravelling were heard at more than one point during the night. That's not to say that the word WILL end - it may just be that something new will happen! Twas a great talk - BUT if you want to discuss the subject matter with someone please don't pick me these are matters far greater than my simple (& snapped) mind can cope with!!! Go to to Mark who I'm will have recovered by now!! :-) |
| Tuesday 27th March, Subject: What's all the fuss about Reiki & what is it anyway?, Speaker/Performer: Ingrid Harvey. Ingrid was good enough to return once more & give the Lion another of her wonderful talks on the art of Reiki. It's always good to see Ingrid at the Lion - we'll be sad when you move away :-( but we wish you all the best. It was a great evening (though Lydia's guiding light was sorely missed) & a very enjoyable talk! I know that there's at least three of the regulars that have expressed an interest in looking into doing their Reiki level 1. |
| Tuesday 27th February, Subject: VIRGIN's Night, Speaker/Performer: Clare, Julia, Tracey, Mark & Keith, The idea of Virgin's night is to encourage Paganlion members & regulars at the Paganlion moots to get a taste for giving talks to the local Pagan community - hopefully one or more of the group will get the bug & we'll have willing volunteers for the future! Anyway - that was the philosophy, here's what actually happened. Clare - Clare gave a talk on Gerald Gardener - much of the research (i got the impression) came in from Syd at the last minute. It was an eclectic talk that covered some of the various some of the claims & counter claims about Gardener. Clare left it up to us to make our minds up. Jayne - Jayne had a great talk lined up (I know, I talked to Cliff about it!), however - she had to unavoidably back out :-( Julia - Julia gave a cool speech on some of the famous cunning folk, what they done & what they were famous for. Tracey - Tracey gave a very informative talk about the weirdness of the Apocrypha, stunned silence stood witness to the fact that it covered all the bases & was thus impossible to question :-) Mark - Marks talk on how the elements are perceived across the globe was up to his high standards - personally, I'll never think of Ron Wood in the same light again. Keith - I gave a very disjoined & confusing talk on my own personal opinions of Demons, Devils, Angels & the Fey. I enjoyed giving the talk - but I'm damned if I know what other people though of it! Thanks to all that took part, it was great fun to hear & would you believe that It's even been requested that we should run it again sometime? |
| Tuesday 23rd January, Subject: Pagan Lion AGM & Draw for Virgin's Night, Thanks to all those brave souls that fought their way to our 1st moot of 2007 - I know an AGM isn't the most exciting thing on the face of the planet - be we have to hold them - just so we know that you're all happy! I trust that if anyone's got any comments & couldn't make the meeting they'll drop me an email. The drawn for virgin's night went well & you wouldn't believe the raffle - it seems like everyone's xmas reject presents had turned up - a good giggle! |
| Past Talks of the year 2006 |
| Tuesday 28th November, Subject: Rennes Le Château, Speaker/Performer: Pat & Bill, Time: 7:30 for 8:00, Cost: £1 for Pagan Lion members, £2 for non members, Pat & Bill were good enough to give the Lion it's last talk of 2006! It was a strange & complicated topic that Pat covered in a lot of detail with her own pictures from in & around the area. It kept the room quite & focused on the topic for a long time! Thanks for the talk guy! It was a great way to round the year off! |
| Tuesday 24th October, Subject: An Evening of Dark & Magical Poetry & Plays, Speaker/Performer: The Leigh Mummers - Wow!!! Thanks to the Leigh Mummers & friends for an absolutely incredible evening of entertainment & edification :-) I can only speculate at the amount of work you all must have had to put into it to pull it off!! The Lion's in awe ladies & gentlemen - you've set a standard that I doubt we'll beat in a hurry!!! I hope that the "monster mash" eventually leaves you all in peace & quiet :-) |
| Tuesday 26th September, Subject: Gems, Gemstones & their Uses, Speaker/Performer: Gareth Hughes. Our thanks on three fronts go out to Gareth! Firstly, thanks for filling in & giving this talk at such short notice. Secondly, thanks for a fantastic talk!!! Thirdly, thanks for putting up with all the giggles from certain parties - we'll have to split you ladies up if it carries on like this, If it had been me giving the talk I'd have embarrassed you all something wicked (I have my ways!)- fortunately Gareth's far too well mannered for such things :-) Seriously though Gareth - thanks for a great talk, personally I found it very interesting & informative & I especially liked the guided mediation! I never did get round to asking you about Imperial Topaz - guess I'll just have to pop into the shop at some point!!! |
| Tuesday 22nd August, Subject: Phrenology, Speaker/Performer: Laurie Manning. Laurie gave us a great talk on this VERY strange subject! I mean feeling the bumps on peoples heads - how strange does it get! There was a slim turn out, but it was wonderful to see a couple of new faces in the room - I hope we'll see them again soon? May be the poor turn out was due to the use of the "ology" in the title of the talk? Who knows - my be we'd have got a better turn out id I'd billed the talk as "bump feeling" - who knows :-) Thanks for the talk Laurie, it was great - I'm still looking for a way to use the word PHILOPROGENITIVITY" in conversation!!! |
| Tuesday 25th July, Subject: Sacred Spaces, Speaker/Performer: Carol Tierney, Carol & co gave us a wonderful & very educational talk on sacred spaces. Carol's own favourite sacred space is quite obviously Rollrights Stones!!! & she can get quite rabid about the subject! Did you know - for instance - that leaving flowers to rot away on a ancient stone (as an offering) can actually do it hard!!! Sometimes even actions with the best of intent can not be the best of actions - Carol pointed out that milk & bread were the best offerings to leave at ancient stones! A great talk Carol - hope you'll be back to see the Pagan Lion soon!!! |
| Tuesday 27th June, Subject: Julian the Apostate, Speaker/Performer: Robin Herne - Robin descended from his Ipswich fastness (complete with his own hecklers) to give us a great little talk on this most unusual of Roman emperors (well, ok - not as unusual as the horse - but you get the point). The talks highlight (other than the toga that is Robin) was the open discussion of the changes that Julian wanted to make to Christian Rome to re-invigorate the Pagan faith. Modern Pagans could do a lot worse than looking back at Julian & thinking about his ideas & mistakes. |
| Tuesday 23rd May, Subject: The Vikings at Home, Speaker/Performer: Val Bannister - Val couldn't make it to give us her talk tonight - not only was she jet lagged & over heated from her adventures in Mexico - but the spirits kind of told her that leaving home on the 23rd was just not meant to happen! As we all know - the spirits are not lightly ignored! So well make space for Val again in the near future!! We just had a chat session with the Lion members that turned up - trying to work out what people want to do! The message goes out to all our members - if there's someone you've seen in your travels that you'd like to see give a talk at the Lion, get in touch and we'll do what we can to persuade them to attend! |
| Tuesday 25th April, Subject: Camp Bling & Magic Done on Site At Priory Park, Speaker/Performer: Adrian, Time: 7:30 for 8:00, Cost: £1 for Pagan Lion Members, £2 for Non-Members - Adrian gave a very informative talk about the history of "Eco"-Magik & how they have been using it to both influence events & protect Camp Bling & the Saxon Burial site that's under threat from the planned "insane" road development scheme in the area. |
| Tuesday 28th March, Subject: Women without hope ,Speaker/Performer: Lily Thompson, Time: 7:30 pm for 8:00, Cost: £1 for Pagan Lion Members, £2 for Non-Members - I completely pegged this talk wrong!!! A Break down in communication between me & Lydia I guess - Bad Keith - must try to do better! The talk was about a whole batch of experiences in South America of a Reiki healer who was interacting with a Christian church known as the Renegades - I caught the end of the talk & frankly it was outstanding! Just goes to show you that we often don't know how good these talks are & don't do them justice in our adverts! Hope you'll forgive me Lily? |
| Tuesday 28th Feb, Subject: Clairvoyance & Mediumship, Speaker/Performer: Terry Smith, Time: 7:30 pm for 8:00, Cost: £1 for Pagan Lion Members, £2 for Non-Members, I'm told that there was a good turn out for this talk - with some new faces scattered in amongst the old friends! Thanks to Terry for coming all the way to Southend to give us another great talk! I'll make sure that I'm in attendance for the next on - promise! |
| Tuesday 24th Jan, Subject: Performance of a "Gawain & the Green Knight", Speaker/Performer: The Old Leigh Mummers, Time: 7:30 pm for 8:00, Cost: £1 for Pagan Lion Members, £2 for Non-Members - The Old Leigh Mummers certainly didn't let us down, they put on a wonderful couple of shows for us! The Lion was well & truly entertained. Many thanks to all the faces (both old & new) that turned up - it was a good showing & a great way to start the new year! |
| Past Talks of the year 2005 |
| Tuesday 22nd of November 2005, Subject: Folk Lore, Speaker: Pete Jennings, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Thanks go out to Pete for popping over to Southend to give the last talk of the Pagan Lion's year. Pete concentrated on one particular aspect of Folklore - specifically traditional song & dance! I didn't know Pete sung such a good song! It's amazing the things you learn about people at these events. I'm sorry to report that we completely failed the chorus challenge, we just couldn't keep up with the well practiced Rhythm of the song when Pete suddenly sped it up & sung it at it's proper pace. Cheers for a great evening of storytelling & song Pete! Now all the kids know why the Wren is the King of the birds!!!! |
| Tuesday 25th of October 2005, Subject: Witch Trials in Britain, Speaker: Terry Smith, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Terry addressed this sensitive subject in a wonderful manner!!! He began the talk by outlining what happened in one first cases where a rabid nutter was executed for organising a mob to hang an alleged "Witch". After that he had the audience "eating out of the palm of his hand" :-) Much of Terry's talk was specific to Suffolk - but he cited plenty of parallels in Essex tradition! I only hope that someone from the Lion will take up the challenge & look into the records held in places like Chelmsford & find out more about our specific Witch Trial history here at home in Essex. Thanks go out to Terry for coming all the way to Southend & giving us what proved to be a very popular talk. |
| Tuesday 27th of September 2005, Subject: The Wizard of Oz, Speaker: Carol Tierney, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: You may have heard of this talk, Carol gave it at Leaping Hare 2004. I missed it there, but I'm certainly going to be wandering along to see if all the good things that I heard about it are true. Unfortunately, I STILL can't vouch for this talk! I was in "one of my moods" & didn't want to inflict myself upon the Lion this evening for the worry that I would bring the evening down!! I'm told that the talk was excellent - so Carol, I hope you're doing it again somewhere soon, cos I really do want to hear it! Thanks for coming all the way down to Southend & I hope that we'll see you again very soon. |
| Tuesday 23rd of August, Subject: Herbal Magic, Speaker: Val Thomas, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Our thanks to Val for an excellent talk! To those that missed it - hah! shame on you :-) You missed one of the best talks of the year. I really hope that we can get Val back some time soon. I'm a little concerned however about the image that Val paints of her house - it's enough to make any self respecting Witch positively green (no pun intended) with envy!!! |
| Tuesday 26th of July, Subject: Egyptian Mythology , Speaker: Robin Herne, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Another great talk from Robin. He covered what he called the more "interesting" aspects of the mythology. Robin's attire also bears mention - a strange ancient Egyptian he made with that red moustache peering out from the white make-up. As usual our thanks go out to Robin for an entertaining & interesting talk! |
| Tuesday 28th of June 2005, Subject: The Medicine Wheel, Speaker: John Wind Surridge, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: John gave us a great talk on the basics of the Medicine Wheel, followed by storytelling and drumming from David. A great night I think was had by all, I'm sure we'll see John and Co back at the Lion soon, he's certainly more than welcome. |
| Tuesday 24th of May 2005, Subject: The Number Seven & all it's Connotations, Speaker: Bill Forster, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Wow!! What a talk - I've still got the information overload headache!!! I'm just sad that I put on such a bad show with the No.7 quiz! May there will be a next time & I'll do better ??? |
| Tuesday 26th of April 2005, Subject: Metal Working & Northern Mythology, Speaker: Chris Wood, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members, £1.00 for members, Notes: Thanks Chris, a great talk - right up a hell of a lot of peoples streets :-), hope you enjoyed the Southend hospitality? A very well received talk - I have no doubt that we'll be asking Chris back very soon - I just hope the trip down from Norwich didn't put him off!!! |
| Tuesday 22nd of March 2005, Subject: A Charity Night of Fun & Information, Speaker: Lynda & Friends, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £3.00 for non-members £1.50 for members (All door money & donations going to Greek animal rescue), Notes: This will be a night with a difference. You've heard of speed dating; well this will be a nigh of speed information. Lynda & friends will be set-up to give you a brief taster on Tarot, Reflexology, Tai Chi & various other therapies. OK!! I missed this one. I fully realize that I'm going to be made to suffer - but I'll just have to take my medicine! Sometimes work calls :-( I'm told that it was an enjoyable evening and that a fair amount of money was raised for the charity - Lydia didn't let us down & I'm sure this won't be the last time we see "the bell" |
| Tuesday 22nd of February 2005, Subject: "Wolf Lore", Speaker: Robin Herne, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Robin certainly braved Southend this night. Twas the first snow of the year that had persisted to any extent. Thanks to all those that turned out to make Robin feel welcome & keep the room nice & warm. Robin gave a very engaging & lively talk on the history of various aspects of Wolf Mythology from around the western world & attempted to explain the historical prejudices against the wolf in western culture. We also explored the Werewolf and it's links to the past & the Hollywood phenomena. A great talk that you'll regret having missed!! |
| Tuesday 25th of January 2005, Subject: The "Organic Allotment", Speaker: Graham Burnett, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: - £1.00 for non-members, members free, Notes: - Graham was good enough to step in at the 11th hour & give a very interesting & off the wall discussion session on environmental issues - it wasn't actually anything to do with allotments, but it was a good laugh & eye opening on a number of issues! It's amazing the number of closet Ad men & women we seem to have at the Lion. I mean, just how many things are there you can say about a rather sad looking potted plant :-) |
| Past Talks of the year 2004 |
| December 2004, Notes: The Pagan Lion doesn't hold a "4th Tuesday" event in December. Historically, personal arrangements tend to get in the way, so we hold a Yule Party with an informal ritual - get together & good laugh instead of being all serious (well, we're not THAT serious :-) |
| Tuesday 23rd of November 2004, Subject: Egyptian Mysteries Workshop, Speaker: Paula Thompson Bates, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Many thanks to Paula (& Peter for all the lugging of stuff :-) - It turns out that they'd just moved house on the very same day! So thanks go doubly for turning up to give the talk under such difficult circumstances. The talk was a wonderful mixture of an introduction to the Egyptian Path, a primer in the basics of Egyptology & a whistle stop tour of some of the stranger theories about one or two of the temples. Paula rounded of the evening with (what I've no doubt wrongly described as) a balancing ritual using Egyptian essential oils. |
| Tuesday 26th of October 2004, Subject: Talk & Slide show on Bats & their Conservation, Speaker: Glen Stimpson from the Bats Conservation Trust, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Glen didn't bring any Bats along to the talk, but you could hardly fault him for that! He didn't have any sick bats in his charge at the time! Glen's a speaker with a style all of his own! It was a great talk with a serious note & an excellent cause! I don't think anyone who went will forget about the Oxo cube test in a hurry :-) |
| Tuesday 28th of September 2004, Subject: Talk & Demonstration on Flower Arranging throughout the Pagan Year, Speaker: Diane Blomfield, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Lydia tells me that this was an informative & interesting evening showing how to make different flower arrangements for the various pagan celebrations whilst also telling us about how many of our ordinary flowers are either poisonous or have hallucinogenic effects. Yet another talk I couldn't get too, but at least this time I had a good excuse - I couldn't walk!! |
| Tuesday 24th of August 2004, Subject: General Discussion & Planning Night, Speaker: None as such - all welcome to get up & add their view point!, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £1.00 for non-members free for members, Notes: We had a pleasant evening with about 20 or so regulars in attendance. We chatted about up & coming events & asked for ideas & comments about the way the Moot organises events & lectures! A very useful session! |
| Tuesday 27th of July 2004, Subject: Talk on & Demonstration on North American Indian Traditions, Speaker: John Wind Surridge & David, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £3.00 for non-members £1.50 for members, funds going to help native American families in South Dakota. Notes: An excellent talk with a very large turn out, lots of new faces - good evening with a very interesting talk by an engaging speaker. |
| Tuesday 22nd of June 2004, Subject: Talk & demonstration on Natural Dyeing, Speaker: Val Thomas, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Yet again I've missed a talk <boy - I'm going to get in trouble with the Lion at this rate> - I'm told that the talk was VERY good <we do try to get the BEST speakers down to the Pagan Lion!> & extremely informative! Packed with the sort of stuff that no self respecting herbalist or fashion conscious Pagan would wish to be in the dark about! |
| Tuesday 25th of May 2004, Subject: Talk on Irish Druidism (in full costume), Speaker: Robin Herne, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Bad person that I am! I failed to get to this talk <wanted to - I've always been impressed by Robin's talks in the past!>. I'm told that rather than a talk on Druidism it turned into more of a lecture on the history & legendary stories & traditions of the Celtic peoples. All delivered in Robin's inimitable style - but NOT a talk on Druidism! May be it's Robin & he's angling for another invite to deliver the advertised talk! Hope so - because I'll make sure I don't miss the next one !! |
| Tuesday 27th of April 2004, Subject: Talk & Demonstration on Magnetic Crystal Sound Healing, Speaker: Michelle Poulter, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: A very interesting talk on a VERY comprehensive subject. The coloured bottles were something that I'd seen some time ago & it was very interesting to actually have them explained! Michelle was a very engaging speaker - with an in depth knowledge of a field that covered to be frank everything ! Hope you didn't miss this one ! |
| Tuesday 23rd of March 2004, Subject: Talk on Reiki, Massage and Stress Relief, Speaker: Ingrid Harvey, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Ingrid's a Reiki master (or should that be mistress ?) from the Southend area. This is, I think, the second time that Ingrid's given a talk for the Pagan Lion. There were stress questionnaires (which I didn't manage to max out - which surprised me!), discussions of stress & stress management and a demonstration of massage & Reiki. Another talk which (too be honest !) you didn't want to miss. |
| Tuesday 24th of February 2004, Subject: Eroticism in the Pagan World (Part 2), Speaker: Robin Herne, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: This talk was kind of part 2 of a talk that Robin gave in 2003. Robin's a very engaging speaker & made what could be an embarrassing subject into an interesting & amusing talk. You'd be surprised at how much you didn't know about this subject! So if you missed this talk - well, you missed a goodie ! |
| Tuesday 27th of January 2004, Subject: Perma Culture, Speaker: Graham Burnett, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Don't know how this one went as I had to disappear from the moot before the talk actually started. |
| Past Talks of the Year 2003 |
| December 2003, Notes: The Pagan Lion doesn't hold a "4th Tuesday" event in December. Historically, personal arrangements tend to get in the way, so we hold a Yule Party with an informal ritual - get together & good laugh instead of being all serious (well, we're not THAT serious :-) |

| Tuesday 28th of October 2003, Subject: Runes, Speaker: Pete Jennings, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Pete gave us the full works & the evening was good fun. Think there's a standing challenge on the good Mr. Jennings to come back to Southend and conduct a "Northern" tradition ritual for us. |
| September 2003, Subject: Ritual Design or Some such, Speaker: Tony, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: As I understand it. this talk had to be called off at the last minute, I'll have to check up what happened at this Moot !!! |

| Tuesday 27th of May 2003, Subject: Talk on Music in Magic, Speaker: Dr Melvin Willin, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £1.00 for non-members free for members, Notes: Complete with quiz, which the "Moot" almost managed to win (we'll try harder next time) |
| Tuesday 27th of May 2003, Subject: North American Indian Traditions, Speaker: John "Wind" Surriage, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £2.00 for non-members £1.00 for members, Notes: Complete with drumming circle & demonstration dancing, good stuff all round ! |
| Tuesday 25th of March 2003, Subject: Reiki, Speaker: Ingrid Harvey, Time: 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 start, Cost: £1.00 for non-members free for members, Notes: Ingrid that was kind enough to do the talk for us also carried out lots of practical demonstrations of Reiki for us.
